Sunday XI March On

29/7/2014

The Sunday XI's impressive form continued on the road at Notts Unity Casuals.

The hosts batted first and were soon in trouble as Kyle Welch and Jake Lowe set about the top order. With four quick wickets taken Unity needed a partnership and got one when the fifth wicket pair added 70. The innings stuttered towards tea with Calvo using 8 bowlers by the time the hosts had been bowled out in the 39th overs for 158.

Brins and Nathan opened up & Brins was soon back in the Pav. But that was it as no more wickets were lost as Will Peat continued his remarkable Sunday run scoring with 82 not out supported by Nathan with 59 not out. The target was passed with over 6 overs remaining. 4 more points towards the promotion target.

Cal Leads Home The 'Cubs'!

In a vital relegation battle at GLA, Long Eaton were the visitors and were eventually mauled!

After winning the toss, Scotty invited L/E to have first use of 'The Road'. When Nathan Johnston nipped out the opener early doors, all appeared well. But a couple of missed chances saw L/E recover and move the score along. The second wicket fell when Brins had the other opener trapped LBW for 27, but the third wicket partnership began to look menacing as the score approached 100. However a great piece of fielding by 'Cub' Peat saw a direct hit and Daddy Bear was on his way back to the changing rooms. From then on the batting subsided somewhat with all the bowlers getting in on the act. Apart from Villiers with a slogged 31, none of the other batsman had any success and what had looked to be a promising position for L/E half way through the innings, ended with 204-9 off 50 overs.

Following tea and Calvo's usual poor start to the innings (30-3 off 16 overs), the game was one way traffic! Cal & Will Peat added 68 runs for the fourth wicket until Will chased a wide one. Skipper Scott then joined Cal and the bowlers were bear-ied! A fabulous partnership of just under a hundred brought Calvo to the brink of victory until Cal fell nine runs short of a deserved century. There were no more alarms as Scotty remained to the end finishing on 46 not out as a 5 wicket victory and 20 vital points were collected.

BOM Cal Jayes - Super knock.

Bad Day For The Seconds

The 2nd XI made the short trip to the City Hospital to take on Basford Mill in what turned out to be a very one sided affair.

Basford batted first and the bowlers wilted in the sun. 45 overs later, the innings closed on 299-5........ouch!! Calverton's reply never got out of first gear, only Jake Lowe made any impression scoring 59 as Calvo mustered 132 all out.

Sunday XI Stay Top

22/7/2014

The Sunday XI's impressive form continued with a victory on the road at Fiskerton.

Despite Saturday's heavy rain, a dry wicket greeted the teams on which Calverton had first use. Run scoring proved to be difficult in a reduced 30 overs a side game on a wicket that turned appreciably. With five wickets down in next to no time, it was left to Matt Dean (30) and Skipper Darren Wright (38 not out) to give the total a boost. Adam Carratt coming in at 9 also contributed with 21. With the next highest score being 'extras' a final total of 141-8 off 30 overs was reasonable given the way the ball was spinning.

Brinsley Kirkham was asked to open the bowling and the ball turned miles! After 6 overs Brins' figures were 5-15
and Fiskerton's batting was in disarray. Despite 40 from Fiskerton's number 6, the hosts were bowled out in the 24th over. Matt Dean claiming 3 wickets & Luke Chadbourne the other one as victory was recorded by 33 runs.

Four more points and still top of the league!

MOM Brinsley Kirkham.

Both of Saturdays games fell foul of the torrential rain that hit Nottinghamshire on Friday & Saturday.

Alas, all was not lost as GLA hosted the Calvo Body Surfing Championships. Check out the action here: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=10152334728683432&set=vb.508258431&&theater

Sunday Run Fest!

15/7/2014

Colston Bassett were the visitors to GLA on another glorious, sunny, run-soaked day. By the end of the game the cumulative total of runs scored on 'The Road' for the weekend went passed 900!

Captain Daz was a popular man as he told the troops they were batting first. Will & Flea strapped em on as the bowlers squeezed into their shorts! Now the last time Flea & Will opened up you may remember they put on in excess of 200 so today's effort of almost a hundred was pretty poor in comparison! After Flea departed, a 'mini wobble' saw three further wickets fall without many runs being added, but Billy Bennett joined Will and progress was restored. Billy posted a fine half century and Will fell thirteen runs short of another Sunday century. Matt Dean carried on his fine form from Saturday with a quickfire 35. As tea was taken after 40 overs, 259-8 was on the scoreboard.

The visitors reply got off to a fine start as the ball frequently found the boundary and wickets were elusive. It seemed, as the opening pair put on in excess of 150, that victory was on the cards. Even when Father & Son (Daz & Ethan)
did manage to take a couple of wickets the score was approaching 200 and defeat for Calvo appeared inevitable. However, when Daz dismissed Colston opener Peel for a fine 103, the rest of the batting collapsed in spectacular (almost Calvoesq) fashion. Daz finished with 3 wickets as did Billy B, Matt D & Kyle one each and C/B were bowled out for 235 with 2 and a half overs remaining. Remarkable!

Four more points in the quest for promotion.

Over 200 people visited GLA on a beautiful summers evening to witness the opening of the pavilion extension/alterations.

The Mayor of Gedling was on hand to officially open the new facility, witnessed by the youngsters playing Kwik Cricket, Mums & Dads, players, Committee members, Parish Councillors, builders, guests from the Riding School.

A splendid buffet was put on by Charlene and all present had a wonderful evening.

2nd's Up & Running (at last)!

14/7/2014

Skipper Matt Lowe wielded the axe and made 5 changes from last weeks team to devastating effect as the Seconds recorded their first win of the season. Okay, so a stronger team was put out as the 'Magaluf 3' had returned to Blighty and one or two more players were available.

Belvoir had first use of 'The Road @ GLA' and recorded the lowest total of the weekend on a wicket which resembled glass! The bowlers toiled manfully with little assistance from the conditions, although it must be said that the wicket wasn't as 'boring' as the one 8 miles away used for the Test Match! Although wickets were hard to come by, runs hardly came at breakneck speed and when 45 overs had been bowled, 204-6 seemed like a strange sort of score. Cairney and Billy Armstrong took 2 a piece, with one for Dickon & a run out. Credit to the bowlers for keeping a lid on it.

Calvo's reply got off to a poor start (when can we have a good one - please?!), as Will and Eddie were soon back in the hutch with just 21 on the board. However a fine partnership of just over a hundred between Billy A (69) & James Cairney (26) got the innings back on track. When Cairney & Billy fell in quick succession,124-2 had become 126-4. Jordan Jackson and Graham Waghorn then put on a valuable 40 runs until JJ was caught behind. Callum Williamson joined Wag and there were no further alarms as the target was achieved with 5 wickets & 9 overs to spare. Wag carrying on his recent good form with an undefeated 42.

So 18 points in the battle to beat the drop
. Onwards & upwards!

1st's Battle in Vain

14/7/2014

A glorious sunny day greeted the teams at The Strand, Attenborough, with both teams giving there all to gain points for the respective battles ahead at either end of the table.

Batting first, Calvo were soon in trouble as Darren Wright departed in the first over. But Ryan Evans joined Matt Dean and 64 were added before Ryan was caught behind. A further 63 were added by Cal and Matt taking the score to 127 before Cal smashed a long hop to deep mid wicket. With James Toogood not bothering the scorers a good position was in danger of being thrown away. Matt Dean remained composed as the wickets continued to fall although runs were added as well. When Matt was seventh out for a well structured 76 the total had moved on to 199. Flea & Jake Lowe then added a little impetus to the total and after 50 overs the score had reached 231-7. A fair total which gave the bowlers something to work with, but a good wicket & lightning outfield, meant we'd have to bowl/field well to have any chance.

Following a sumptuous salad tea, Attenborough's innings couldn't have got off to a worse start (as far as Calvo were concerned) as the ball disappeared to all parts. 42-0 from just 6 overs was not what the doctor ordered! However, Ryan struck in the very next over and when the 'slowies' were brought into the attack, Daz snared another and 42-0 had quickly become 62-2. Despite Brins & Daz exerting a little more control, McKinley & Bowles put together a partnership of 66 taking the score along to 128 before Kyle took the prize wicket of McKinley clean bowling him for 70. Although further wickets were taken by Brins, Kyle & Ryan, Attenborough always had their noses in front and as the 48th over was ending the target was reached with 3 wickets remaining.

Seven hard earned points in the fight against relegation.

2nds Lose Again!

9/7/2014

With the short staffed 1st XI calling on players from the 2nds, it was perhaps of little surprise that the 'Twos' slipped to another defeat.

Batting first and despite a second wicket partnership of 80 between Dave Dean (35) & James Cairney (60), the batting display was again inept. Having reached 90-1, the batting card, which had more ducks on it than the lake on Arnold park, capitulated spectacularly to 128-7. Had it not been for a battling 36 not out from Graham Waghorn & 17 from Skipper Matt Lowe, the total would have looked very sorry for itself. As it was 168-8 off 45 overs was well below par.

The bowling effort started off very well with Michael Nester going straight through his 12 overs in fine fashion taking 3-26. With Cairney & Jarrod Bell taking a wicket a piece and the score on 67-5 a shock win was still on the cards. But with bowling options a tad thin on the ground and as soon as Michael Nester had finished his spell, wickets became increasingly difficult to come by. The sixth wicket partnership added 80 for Gedling & Sherwood and defeat was therefore inevitable with 4 overs remaining.
