SATs week was always going to be a difficult week to get a team out, and fielding only 1 player of the actual age group meant we had a number of inexperienced and younger players, with 4 players making their debut hardball game for us against a very good and experienced Cuckney side.
Some high quality batting from Cuckney’s opening pair resulted in their opening batsman scoring a whopping 34 from his 4 overs. Our bowling and fielding got progressively better as the game went on, with Sam and Cameron only conceding 4 and 3 from their respective pairs of overs.
With their first exposure to hardball cricket coming up against some quality bowling, both Jacob and Lachlan can be extremely proud of keeping their wickets intact. With some resolute defensive shots, there was no way through for their bowlers from our first two pairs.
A good hat trick from the opposition meant we lost a few more wickets than we’d have liked, but given the difference in age and experience all boys can be extremely proud of themselves. (X1 Under 7, x2 under 8’s, x3 Under 9’s, x1 Under 10 and just the one U11 against a side involving x2 players with representative experience, was never going to be easy, but everyone enjoyed themselves and acquitted themselves well). Plenty to work on, but with the Under 10’s fixtures commencing next week, we should start to see more improvements as all the players gain experience invaluable match experience.
