The under 11’s season got underway with an incredibly closely fought cup match against Kirkby Portland, eventually losing off the last ball of the game. It was the first hardball game for 3 of our players so it was a good learning curve for all, early in the season, with plenty of positives throughout.
Losing the toss we were put into bat with Cameron and Josh G scoring 7 from the first 4 overs, some lovely shots straight down the ground, but running between the wickets need to improve to get the most from the shots played. Josh S and Harry B were next in scoring 6 between them, a trademark Josh pull rewarded him with a two, but unfortunately trying to pull one off the stumps resulted in him being bowled. Charlie and Toby were next up with Charlie hitting our only boundary of the innings. Our final pairing of Harry W and Sam were the only pair to not lose a wicket so a net score of 5 between them was the highest scoring partnership. A competitive score of 233 posted, but the loss of 5 wickets meant that the bowling would have to be tight and accurate to give us any chance.
Only 2 runs being scored in their first 4 overs and a wicket a piece for Harry B and Josh G meant that we were in the game. Another couple of wickets, this time for Toby and Sam meant that we were well ahead of the game at the half way stage. No room for complacency though as a couple of good overs for the visitors had them just edging it. Going into the last two overs the score was tied, with Kirkby needing to lose no wickets and score one run. The first ball of the penultimate over was skyed high and Charlie held his nerve to catch well, much to the delight of the onlookers. This now meant Kirkby needed 7 from 11 balls. Cameron finished off his over well only conceding another two singles, meaning 5 was needed from Captain Josh’s final over. Josh kept his tight lines with a couple of near run out chances 3 was needed off the last ball. Unfortunately for us their star man managed to middle the ball and see them over the line, scoring their only boundary of the game. A great game and superb effort from everyone. A special mention to Leo, although playing for the opposition, his bowling figures of 1 for 5 from 3 overs were very impressive, and certainly didn’t help our cause J. Not losing wickets or bowling wides, alongside better running between the wickets will see us improve drastically. Well done to all and thanks to James for scoring.
