The first of back to back games with Clifton Village saw the visitors take the victory at GLA on a bright & breezy day.
The wicket was like concrete, the outfield like lightning and all seemed set for a run fest as Daz & Scotty opened up, alas what followed was not in the script! Apart from the Captain leading from the front with a well earned fifty, the remainder collapsed in spectacular fashion. Had it not been for a tenth wicket partnership of almost fifty (Brinsley Kirkham 36 & Kyle Welch 18*), a total of 159 wouldn't have been attained. So 160 to win and 53 overs to get them in, the result was a foregone conclusion.....or was it?
Two early wickets gave the hosts some hope as Clifton limped to 25-2, but veteran Richard Harrison stood firm as Clifton recovered to 90-4. As Harrison reached his fifty and the fifth wicket partnership with Croxhall also reached 50 nobody could have imagined the drama that was to unfold! 140-4 became 144-9 in the blink of an eye as Welch & Bennett ripped through the Clifton batting - a collapse of Calvoesque proportions! Throw in a smart run out by James Toogood and Calvo were now in the box seat for an unlikely victory. However, number 11 Robinson had other ideas and finished the game off with three consecutive lusty boundaries to break Calvo hearts.
MOM Kyle Welch - Inspired spell of bowling.
